This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to work on set with none other than Shaquille O’Neal. Yes, the Shaq—NBA legend, actor, and all-around larger-than-life personality. Currently starring in “Gravesend”, Shaq brought more than just star power to the set—he brought heart, humility, and a genuine connection with everyone around him.
As a photographer, I’ve had the chance to work with some amazing talent, but there was something truly special about this experience. From the moment Shaq arrived, it was clear that he wasn’t just there to shoot scenes; he was there to be part of the community.
What struck me the most was how effortlessly down-to-earth he is. Despite his fame, accolades, and towering presence, Shaq was approachable and warm. The neighborhood kids who had gathered around the set were in absolute awe, and Shaq didn’t disappoint. He took time—real time—with each and every one of them.
He posed for photos with all the kids, flashing that iconic smile, and making them feel like the real stars of the day. He signed everything from trading cards to jerseys and basketballs. Watching their faces light up was one of the most rewarding parts of the weekend. Shaq also had this incredible way of making everyone feel valued, no matter who they were. It wasn’t a performance; it was just him—genuine, grounded, and grateful.
What’s more, his energy on set was contagious. He brought this laid-back vibe that made the whole atmosphere feel lighter, even during the longest shoots. It’s rare to see someone of his stature carry themselves with such humility, and it was a reminder of what truly makes someone great.
Working alongside Shaq on “Gravesend” wasn’t just another day on set—it was an experience that reminded me why I love what I do. Capturing those candid moments, not just behind the scenes of a show, but of real human connection, was inspiring.
Shaq didn’t just show up; he showed out—for the fans, for the kids, for the neighborhood. And in doing so, he reminded us all that being a legend isn’t just about what you do on the court or on screen; it’s about who you are when the cameras stop rolling.
Here’s to more shoots like this one—and to working with more genuinely good people like Shaquille O’Neal.
