Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and as a photographer, it’s one of my absolute favorite times of year to capture love, connection, and those fleeting “little years” that go by too fast. Whether you’re planning a session in the studio or outdoors, getting ready for your Mother’s Day photos doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little preparation (and a sprinkle of patience), your session can be as beautiful and stress-free as possible.
Here are my top five tips to help you get the most out of your Mother’s Day photo session.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
When it comes to outfits, think in color palettes rather than matching outfits. Soft pastels, creams, blush, light blue, and earth tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on the connection, not the clothes. Start with Mom’s outfit first—something she feels comfortable and confident in—and then build around that for everyone else.
Avoid logos, neon colors, or bold patterns that can distract from the emotion of the images. Flowing dresses or tops with texture (like lace or linen) are always a win!

Prep the Kiddos (and Keep it Positive)
Tell your children about the session in a fun, upbeat way. Let them know it’s going to be a special time to laugh and snuggle with mom (and maybe even earn a treat afterward!).
If they’re younger, make sure they’re fed and rested before the session. Even just a little snack beforehand can work wonders.

Let Go of Perfection
As a photographer, I can tell you—the best photos are rarely the “posed” ones. The magic happens in the in-between moments: when your toddler reaches up for a kiss, when your child giggles into your shoulder, or when everyone’s laughing because someone told a silly joke.
Trust me to guide you through natural poses and prompts that feel more like cuddling on the couch than posing stiffly. Just show up, be present, and let me do the rest.

Bring a Few Comfort Items
If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or lovey, bring it along! Sometimes it makes all the difference for those first few frames when they’re warming up. I’ve even incorporated them into final shots because they’re such a big part of your child's story right now.
Also, pack a backup snack (nothing too messy!) and a neutral-colored blanket if we’re shooting outdoors.

Trust the Process and Have Fun
You’ve booked this session to celebrate your connection, not to stress over every little detail. I promise you—I’ve seen it all. The kids who run wild at first? Totally normal. The meltdowns mid-session? I’ve got tricks up my sleeve. Trust that I’m capturing the love through it all.
The best gift you can give yourself this Mother’s Day is to be in the frame, just as you are, with your little loves. One day, these photos will mean the world to them—and to you.
