Like my friend Jimmy always says, “Never complain when your business is busy!” And he’s right.
As a photographer, there’s nothing quite like the hum of a fully booked schedule. This summer has been wonderfully full—sessions with families capturing milestones, micro weddings, maternity sessions, and plenty of playful little ones in front of my camera. Between the studio appointments and on-location sessions, my calendar has been a patchwork of creativity and connection.
But even in the busiest seasons, I find it essential to carve out time to photograph simply for myself—to revisit the very first passion that made me fall in love with photography in the first place: nature.
There’s something grounding about stepping outside with no agenda, no timeline, and no shot list. Just me, my camera, and the quiet invitation to slow down and notice the details that so often get overlooked. This summer has offered an abundance of beauty right in my own backyard.
I’ve spent early mornings watching squirrels dart between the trees, their tiny paws clutching acorns with fierce determination. Chipmunks have made cameo appearances, pausing long enough to let me capture their curious little faces. And the flowers—vivid bursts of color that seem to change by the day—have become my favorite backdrop for experimenting with light and composition.
It’s easy to forget how much inspiration is waiting just beyond the back door. When the days are full of clients, editing, and planning, these moments outside are a reminder that photography doesn’t always have to be about producing something for someone else. Sometimes, it’s simply about staying connected to wonder.
If you’re feeling the pull of a busy summer (or just the steady rhythm of life), I encourage you to take a little time for yourself. Wander through your neighborhood or sit quietly in the garden. You never know what small marvels will appear when you slow down long enough to notice them.
And when I return to my sessions with clients, I feel renewed and re-inspired—ready to capture their stories with the same curiosity and joy I find in my own backyard.
