Weddings have always been a beautiful blend of history and personal style — a day where families gather, cultures unite, and couples start the next chapter of their story. But as times change, so do traditions. Over the years as a wedding photographer, I’ve noticed a shift: many couples are letting go of the more traditional moments like the bouquet and garter toss, and embracing new, more meaningful experiences like first looks and private vows.

And honestly? I love it.

Saying Farewell to the Bouquet Toss

The bouquet toss used to be a highlight — a playful moment designed to “predict” who might be the next to marry. But for many couples now, it can feel outdated or uncomfortable for guests. Not everyone wants the spotlight, and many brides would rather keep their meticulously crafted bouquet as a keepsake than send it flying across the dance floor!

Why couples skip it today:

  • They don’t want to pressure guests into participating
  • It disrupts the flow of the evening and pulls people off the dance floor
  • They prefer more time spent celebrating organically

Instead, I’m seeing brides preserve their bouquets, use them as décor at home, or repurpose them for next-day photos.

The Garter Toss — A Tradition That’s Losing Its Place

The garter toss has become one of the first traditions many couples cross off the list. It can feel awkward for guests, especially when the photographer and videographer are capturing every up-close moment for eternity!

Why this tradition is fading:

  • Couples want their reception to feel classy and comfortable
  • It can make family members cringe (hello grandparents!)
  • It often doesn’t align with the couple’s personal style

Today’s weddings are focusing more on connection than comedy — and that’s a beautiful change.

The Rise of New Traditions: First Looks, First Touches & Private Moments

One of my favorite modern additions? The first look.

It’s emotional. It’s intimate. It’s a moment just for the two of you — away from the crowd and the hustle of the timeline. I’ve photographed countless first looks and every single one tells a deeply personal story.

But first looks aren’t the only new traditions I’m seeing:

New moments couples are embracing:

  • Private vow exchanges during a quiet pause in the day
  • First touches, staying connected while still saving the aisle moment
  • Last dance of the night, just the couple on the dance floor
  • Unity rituals unique to their relationship (planting trees, mixing beers, tying knots)

These new traditions are meaningful because they are intentional. They’re crafted by the couple — not inherited from the past.

Weddings Today Are All About Personalization

What I love most about this evolution is the freedom couples now feel to design a day that genuinely reflects them. Traditions aren’t disappearing — they’re simply evolving.

  • Today’s weddings celebrate:
  • Moments that matter
  • Experiences that feel authentic
  • Love stories that look different for everyone

As a photographer, that means more candid joy, more emotional storytelling, and more images that truly reflect a couple’s relationship — not anyone else’s expectations.

Here’s My Take

Whether you toss a bouquet or share a quiet first look…

Whether you keep the garter or skip it entirely…

Whether you follow all the traditions or create new ones from scratch…

Your wedding day should feel like you.

And that’s a tradition I hope never fades.
