As a photographer who loves capturing pets (and who has watched plenty of pups steal the show during sessions), I can promise that including your pet in your holiday photos not only adds personality, but also creates some of the sweetest, most genuine moments.

Whether you’re bringing your dog, cat, bunny, or even your miniature reindeer (that would be a cool session!), here are my favorite tips to help your holiday pet session run smoothly — and stay fun for everyone.



Bring Their Favorite Treats

Nothing motivates a pet quite like snacks! Treats help with attention, posing, and rewarding good behavior. If your pet has allergies or dietary restrictions, bring something safe that you know works for them.

Bonus Tip: Loud or crinkly treat bags can help capture that perfectly perked-up “what’s that?!” expression.


Practice a Few Simple Commands Beforehand

Simple cues like sit, stay, look, and come make a huge difference during a session. Even if your pet only listens 50% of the time (we get it — the studio is exciting!), a little refresher helps set them up for success.

If your pet doesn’t know commands? No problem — we work with all types of personalities. Sometimes the candid chaos makes the best photos!


Bring Something That Smells Like Home

Studios are full of new scents, sounds, and sights. Bringing a blanket, toy, or bandana from home helps your pet feel grounded and relaxed. It also looks adorable in photos and adds a personal touch.


Keep Accessories Simple and Comfortable

A holiday bow tie, cute scarf, or festive collar can look amazing — as long as your pet is comfortable wearing it. Avoid anything too bulky or complicated that might distract or irritate them.

Remember: the focus is on your pet’s personality, not their costume!


Plan for Breaks

Pets can only give their best for so long. A quick water break, a walk outside, or a few minutes of snuggles can reset their energy and keep them happy.

I always build flexibility into sessions involving pets — we move at their pace.


Bring a “Pet Wrangler”
