I met Kyla three years ago when she trusted me to photograph her son’s very first birthday—a milestone moment that turned into a tradition of yearly family photos ever since. Watching families grow alongside my camera is one of the greatest gifts of this work. This session, though, was something entirely different. This time, the focus wasn’t on milestones or matching outfits or little hands reaching up—it was on Kyla.
Set against the raw, gritty beauty of Concrete City in Nanticoke, PA, this shoot embraced contrast in the best way possible. Weathered concrete walls layered with graffiti became the perfect backdrop for elegance, confidence, and self-expression. Kyla stepped into the frame in a black dress, heels, and a bottle of Jack Daniels in hand, proving that sometimes all it takes to transform a space is attitude and authenticity. The softness of tulle against hard concrete, strength paired with vulnerability—it all came together effortlessly.

The balloons and champagne brought the whole vision together—elevated, festive, and full of intention. There’s something powerful about knowing an image will travel with someone into a moment like that. Standing tall, confident, and ready for what comes next, Shereka’s portrait reflects not only her achievement but the strength it took to reach it across countries and commitments. Every detail mattered, because this photo represented a goal fulfilled.

This was the second session I had the honor of photographing for Calla’s family, and at the time, it felt like a quiet, meaningful continuation of their story.
Just weeks after this photo was taken, Remington passed away in May. Knowing that now, this image holds even more weight. A simple moment—hands gently holding a paw—became a final keepsake. It’s a reminder of love, trust, and the comfort that exists between humans and the animals who walk alongside us for far too short a time.
