A great photograph is so much more than a beautiful image. It’s a feeling, a fleeting moment, a story that can be told without words. Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate just how much composition, timing, place, and narrative all work together to create something truly powerful. One of my favorite images—Seagull Under the Pier—was a perfect example of this harmony, and I was incredibly honored when it was awarded Best in Show at the 2024 Gurwin Photo Contest.
The Power of Composition
When I framed Seagull Under the Pier, I knew the lines of the pier had to lead the eye. Strong composition is what guides a viewer through an image—subtly, yet intentionally. The pier’s structure created a visual tunnel, naturally drawing attention to the seagull mid-flight. There’s something magical about balancing man-made lines with the organic flow of nature.
Timing is Everything
This photo was all about the moment. I remember waiting patiently as the waves rolled in and out, scanning for motion beneath the pier. And then—just for a second—a seagull passed through. That split second was everything. I clicked the shutter at just the right time, freezing a moment that was otherwise invisible to the naked eye.
The Role of Place
Location tells its own story. This scene was captured beneath a weathered pier, where nature and human construction quietly coexist. There’s a moodiness to the setting—the darkened shadows under the pier contrasting with the freedom of the bird’s flight. The environment brought a texture and weight to the image that made it feel grounded yet ethereal.
Storytelling Through the Lens
For me, every photo should say something. Whether it whispers or shouts, a great photo tells a story. Seagull Under the Pier speaks to solitude, movement, and the quiet moments we often overlook. It invites the viewer to wonder: Where is the bird going? What lies beyond the shadows? That’s what I love most about photography—it gives space for the imagination to wander.
About the Gurwin Photo Contest
In 2024, Seagull Under the Pier received Best in Show at the 31st Annual Gurwin Photo Contest, hosted by the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Commack, New York. Out of nearly 1,000 submissions from photographers around the world, the panel selected my image as one that stood out for its composition, clarity, and emotional impact. I was deeply honored to know that my work would be on display in the Helen and Nat Tiffen Gallery, bringing a bit of peace and inspiration to the residents, staff, and visitors there.
Final Thoughts
As a photographer, I’m always chasing the elements that make a photo more than just a picture. Composition. Timing. Place. Story. When they align, something special happens. Seagull Under the Pier will always be one of those moments for me—a quiet reminder of why I do what I do, and the beauty that can be found when we simply stop and watch the world for a while.
